FINAL EXAM- ART 1 The art criticism process: The art criticism process happens in 4 steps.
New evaluation: My piece is a collage on canvas. It utilizes book pages, sheet music, and a graphite sketch on sketchbook paper. The colors involved are mostly browns, and the book pages are yellowed with age. The flowers surrounding the main portrait are freeform and create an illusion of lightness in the piece. The portrait is realistic but slightly stylized. The importance of the piece to me is that I drew my best friend, who has been with me through thick and thin and I wanted to make her something that came from the heart. The piece, I would say, was mostly a success. I did have to find a way around her arm, which was cut off due to the sketchbook paper being too short. I used flowers to cover that up. What is art? Well, to quote Georgia O’Keeffe, “Filling a space in a beautiful way. That's what art means to me.” Art, to me, is a way to escape the world, to portray difficult emotion, to explain to someone how you’re feeling on the inside. Art is more than words, because art is feeling and feeling is expression and expression is art. Art can be serene, or a cacophony of colors, but mostly, art is life. There’s no better way to explain it. Is copying always plagiarism or is there a gray area? I have used copying multiple times this year to aid in the piece’s progress. I would draw a sketch, put it on a projector, and trace it to have a general sense of proportion from my sketch to my final draft. Some examples of copying in pieces this semester include the two-in-one piece, the final watercolor, and the portrait piece. Also, you could, if you are just starting out as an artist, use a reference piece, as long as you give credit because I have seen people steal art online. What is artistic style? Artistic style is the way an artist chooses to express an image or craft. Each person comes from a different background, has different influences, and thus every person has a different artistic style. My personal artistic style blends cartoon and realism when I draw people. Some examples of famous styles include Van Gogh’s very sketchy line work and bold colors, and Picasso’s surreal and blocky paintings. What medium did you like the most? Actually, much to my surprise, I enjoyed both my watercolor pieces more than I’d like to admit. I went into this class hating it at first, but that was only because I hadn’t had proper instruction, so I easily became frustrated when working with it. I enjoyed the flexibility it allowed and the flow of colors and how they interacted with each other on the paper. I did not use a pottery wheel at all this year, which I have never done before. I have done slab pottery before in this class, picture included. It seems so interesting to make pottery that way and I wish I could get a chance to do that in the future!

I chose to create a watercolor piece using a foreground of cool colors and a background of warm colors. For the main piece, i made a bust of an alien/elven girl in my drawing style, which is sort of cartoonish. I picked this project because I hate working in watercolors and I saw this as an opportunity for me to grow as an artist.
My Process:
If I were to do it again, I would tape the girl better, because even though I used masking tape, some oranges still got on her shoulder on the right side of the piece. Name; Drew S.
His portrait is a self portrait. His mediums are Prismacolor pencils and magazine pages in a collage. He wants to finish coloring and do the background in magazines. I used graphite, sheet music, and book pages for my portrait project.
My picture is of my best friend Julianne, who I’m pretty much attached to the hip to. We do everything together, and we have gone through a LOT together, good and bad. I picked her because she deserves everything and even though i can’t give her everything, I can give her my heart and soul, which lives in my art. SCULPTURE FINAL PROJECT I made a slab clay box. I cut 6 identical squares out of slab clay, and pieced them together, leaving one off for the lid of the piece. I then stylized it to look like a character from my little sister’s favorite movie, so I could give it to her as a Christmas present!
My Inspiration for this piece was, again, my sister and her favorite movie, My Neighbor Totoro. The movie is a Japanese animated movie, and I used the main character as my reference. I think the most successful part of the piece was the acrylic paint that I put on it, it really brought the character to life! And the paint on the inside was such a bright and happy color. If I could do the piece again, I would make the squares more even, because the piece did turn out a little lopsided. Yes, I would sign up for sculpture class! I have a lot to learn in that area of art. Plus, I have never used a pottery wheel and that’s something i would love to do! sculpture project This is the final sketch before I started with clay. Her perfect blend of real and unnatural creates a dark, creepy, yet fascinating piece that you could stare at for ages. Her work inspires me because of the tedious amount of precision and detail that went in to each piece. I aspire to spend that much time and practice on a single art piece!
